Why can't I ask candidates about citizenship in the Job Builder?

TruTalent® is designed with built-in AI guardrails to support fair, compliant, and effective hiring. As part of that design, the job builder does not allow job requirements or screening questions related to an applicant’s citizenship.

Citizenship-based criteria can create legal and compliance risks and may unintentionally exclude qualified candidates. To protect employers and candidates alike, our platform restricts these fields and focuses job matching on qualifications, skills, experience, and job-related requirements only.

What should I ask instead?

If your goal is to confirm legal eligibility to work, best practice is to ask whether a candidate is authorized to work in the country where the job is located, rather than asking about citizenship status.

This approach:

  • Aligns with anti-discrimination laws and fair-hiring standards

  • Ensures candidates are evaluated based on merit

  • Allows accurate matching without introducing biased or non-job-related criteria
